FAQ

Basically we are a family team with a passion for music, art and creating spaces where people can experience a different kind of energy. We crazily took on a big old building in Whitley Bay, just up from the sea, which we have turned into a bar, pop up food and creative event space.

Everything you experience here from the sound system to the organic clay plaster walls, hand carved bar tops and art studios were literally built by us and people we have gathered along the way.

Oxygenic in its literal sense means producing oxygen and we loved the idea of building a space that could breathe more life into the arts and our community.

Plus one of our founders also makes analogue synthesisers, one of which was about to be named THE OXYGENIC, so we decided to use the name for the building instead because it aligned so much with what we all wanted to create here.

Whitley Bay and the coast has been our home for a very long time and we have always loved the more diverse and creative part of town our building is located at.

We were also a bit tired of heading into the city for something a bit more cultural, so we just went ahead and built a space we would want to go to ourselves, and that space has become OXYGENIC.

From the outside you don’t really get a sense of how big or how much is going on in OXYGENIC, and people are always surprised when they first come in and discover all the different spaces.

At the front is our main bar, outdoor terrace and pop up café. Then through an almost secret passageway you enter into the larger event space where we host live music, DJs, private parties and other events.

Upstairs, there’s a large studio for art workshops, sound baths, meditation and other group sessions, alongside smaller, more intimate studios for one-to-one work including massage, acupuncture and somatic therapies.

Natural materials run throughout the building, clay, reclaimed wood, natural fabrics, plants and raw, textured finishes. We wanted it to feel warm, earthy and organic.

People often say there’s something almost primal about the way OXYGENIC feels, as though it belongs somewhere else. I think a lot of that comes from the places we’ve travelled to that have inspired us, and the use of natural materials and ancient ways of building we have used throughout creating the space.

Absolutely, our front bar, cafe and terrace is always open for walk in drinks, and at weekends we are open until well after midnight. In fact some of our favourite times in OXYGENIC have happened with no event planned at all, just people randomly walking in and staying way longer than they had planned.

Yes we genuinely love hosting a private party, live music gig or art event and we’ve become pretty well known for having one of the best private party and event spaces on the coast.

You can find out more about our private hire for parties and celebrations here and if you have something in mind for a music, art, comedy or dance event, get in touch here.

We’re always open to hosting a private party and hearing good ideas for an event.

We are a totally inclusive space, where everyone is made to feel safe, welcomed and part of what we are creating, with our entire ground floor having full access for wheelchairs and people with disabilities.

The studios are part of the wider OXYGENIC ecosystem. A space for creating, workshops and experiences that need a slower, more focused energy.

Somewhere between a creative studio, gathering space and a space for deeper exploration, with room for more reflective and therapeutic experiences too.

We love that people of completely different ages and backgrounds end up in the same room here. That’s important to us. Whether that’s for a morning coffee, a late-night drink, a party, a wake, an art group, live music or something completely different, we want OXYGENIC to feel like somewhere you can come as you are. Come with friends or come alone, and still feel a sense of belonging.

From Autumn we are going to get much more organised about letting people know what’s happening, so the easiest way to find out what is coming up is to join our mailing list below. We won’t flood your inbox, just quick updates when new workshops, sessions, live music, events and ideas begin to take shape.
